#001 | Planting the Seeds
Hi, I’m Ryan! You are receiving this because you have signed up to my weekly newsletter for Natural Language Processing (#NLP365), Entrepreneurship, and Life Design content!
Hey friends,
Happy New Year! and welcome to the first issue of the newsletter! I am very excited to finally kick this off :) January is always the month where I plant new seeds and work hard throughout the year to make it grow :) This year I have planted three new seeds:
26/12 Books to Actions project - Read and make level 4 notes on 26 books + take actions on at least 12 books (one per month)
Youtube - One video per week
This Newsletter - One newsletter per week
Why 26 books? So that I have time to take actions on what I have read rather than just consume, wow, and forget! I will share my book notes and actions throughout the year in this newsletter :)
This week I finished reading:
4 Hour Work Week (1st Jan - 4th Jan 2021)
Atomic Habits (5th Jan - 7th Jan 2021)
Total: 2 / 26 books | 0 / 26 level 4 notes | 0 / 12 actions
❓Question of the Week
What seeds are you planting in 2021 and WHY?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of FOMO and start picking up different projects (bottom-up) to work on because they look interesting. An approach that I much prefer is a top-down approach; understanding who I want to be, what I want to do, and etc… before strategising on what projects to take on.
A bottom-up project probably won’t last long because you chose it out of excitement and spontaneity. A top-down project is more likely to last because it’s fun and you have a strong WHY of why you are working on it. And so it’s definitely worth thinking about your WHYs and vision before picking up new projects :)

I can definitely relate to this tweet over the Christmas period. It’s something I would like to be more intentional about this year, but man it’s tough!
💡 Quote of the Week
The only way to become excellent is to be endlessly fascinated by doing the same thing over and over. You have to fall in love with boredom — Atomic Habits
🔥 Recommendation(s) of the Week
Readwise — This is a MUST HAVE for all books readers out there! It syncs up all your highlights from different books into a single place and use space repetition to resurface your best highlights so that you can review them and remember important lessons!
P.S. It doesn’t just syncs up your books highlights 🤯
🔦 AI Research Papers Spotlight of the Week
This week is all about nested Named Entity Recognition! Below are 3 papers from ACL 2020:
Proposed Pyramid, a layered model for nested NER which solves the three common problems with layered model: 1. Works for general overlapping NER 2. Prevents layer disorientation 3. Mitigates error propagation problem as predictions in one layer do not dictate the other layers
Introduced a bipartite flat-graph network, BiFlaG, for nested NER. It has a flat module to extract the outermost entities and a graph module to extract all inner entities. This model bidirectionally considers the interaction between outermost and inner layers! Achieved SOTA under three benchmark datasets
Reformulate NER task to identify the start and end indices as well as assigning a category to the span defined by these pairs. The model is a multi-layer BiLSTM with a biaffine model to score all possible spans in a sentence. They then rank the candidate spans and return the top-ranked spans that comply with the constraints for flat or nested NER

That’s it for this week! I hope you find something useful from this newsletter. More to come next Sunday! Have a good week ahead! 🎮
