Mystery Gift Box #006 | Bloom's Taxonomy for Personal Growth

The best hidden gems I've found; interesting ideas and concepts, thought-provoking questions, mind-blowing books/podcasts, cool animes/films, and other mysteries ❤️

Hey friends,

Bloom’s taxonomy is a popular process used for critical thinking

As I am writing this newsletter and staring down at the Bloom’s pyramid, I started wondering how many people actually (consciously) apply these steps in their lives / projects?

Projects? Maybe a lot… especially in STEMs.

Macro lives? This is rarer in my experience. Bloom’s taxonomy, in the context of life, would be living life consciously / intentionally and it’s one of the paths towards becoming more self-aware.

The reality is probably less black and white… everyone probably applies Bloom’s taxonomy to their lives, either consciously / unconsciously plus we all have strong / weak areas…

I recategorised the Bloom’s taxonomy into four phases:

  1. Knowledge Acquisition (remember)

  2. Knowledge Management (understand)

  3. Knowledge Application (apply, analyse, and evaluate)

  4. Knowledge Creation (create)

Phase 1 and 2 are the learning phases. Phase 3 is the doing phase and phase 4 is the creation (“mastery”) phase.

As you move up the triangle (the phases), there will be less and less people in those phases because it tends to get harder and harder…

Using academic research as an example, any published research papers are considered to be at phase 4. With creation, we are specifically talking about novelty and new work rather than repurposing existing content… It’s very challenging to get publications, especially theoretical work and not many people are at phase 4…

But here’s the thing… phase 4 is optional… and not applicable to most people and their goals…

Phase 1, 2, and 3 are more applicable.

You can outsource phase 1 and 2; even phase 3… with the exception of the actual act of applying and doing. You see this all the time with professional athletes…

Okay… so what’s the whole point about Bloom’s taxonomy and all these phases?

Which one(s) is your strength? Which one(s) is your weakness?

The answers and awareness should shape your personal growth plan that goes beyond the projects itself.

For me…

My strengths are analyse and evaluate.

My weakness is create, which it’s why PhD is a good project that challenges me 🤯

The Rule of Thirds

When you are chasing a dream or doing anything hard, you meant to feel good a third of the time, okay a third of the time, and crappy a third of the time. If the ratio is roughly on that range, then you are doing fine ♥️
