Mystery Gift Box #008 | The Three Pearls of Wisdom
The best hidden gems I've found; interesting ideas and concepts, thought-provoking questions, mind-blowing books/podcasts, cool animes/films, and other mysteries ❤️
Hey friends,
Questions are preludes to actions. They are the seed to potentially break down fears and barriers of accepted knowledge ❤️
A very eventful week this week…
Joined the first session of an 8-week group therapy on Wednesday… too early to know how it’s going to turn out but very excited for the experience :)
Passed my LSR (PhD assessment) on Thursday and officially a third year PhD student 👀
And some socials on Friday and Saturday…
I haven’t written a thing yet for the newsletter and it’s Sunday today…
But I like writing… it’s quite therapeutic…
Plus it helps me organise my thoughts and understanding…
Today’s about the The Three Questions from Toltec Wisdom on How to Discover and Master the Power Within You by Don Miguel Ruiz.
The Three Questions
To find your way in this world you need only answer three questions… first, you must ask yourself “Who am I?”. You will know who you are when you see who you are not.
Second, you must ask yourself “What is real?”. You will know what is real when you accept what is not real.
Third, you must ask yourself “What is love?”. You will know love when you realise what love is not.
Who am I?
What is real?
What is love?
Who you are not… what is not real… what love is not…
There’s a theme of figuring out what X is not…
The thesis here is that everyone is born an authentic being but has been taught certain beliefs about who we are, how we should behave, etc in our early days that we have come to believe that those are our reality (but in reality, they are not)
A life coach once told me that there’s no death of old self and reborning into a new self (a concept that I love)... there’s only you and not you and throughout life, your job is to reconnect with your authentic self by figuring what is not.
The book goes into great details each of the three questions but here I will briefly go over what I have taken away…
Who am I?
Challenge who you are.
Your inner voice of Me…
Me is the person you think of as your real self.
Me was created out of our core beliefs and experiences…
…but Me is not real but an image we attempted to form of ourselves.
Me is not fix… and so we have the power to change the voice of Me.
Me is fictional…
…you can create whatever Me you want through setting new beliefs and actions and experiences.
What is Real?
Challenge what you think you know.
Your mind is only one interpretation of reality… and your interpretation is based on your beliefs and assumptions.
And so we all have the power to steer our reality in a new direction and alter its message by changing our beliefs and assumptions.
Listening is the first step towards understand our mind’s reality and language…
When you make a mistake, do you say “I am stupid” or do you say “it was a stupid mistake”? The former is an example of self-judgement.
Both positive and negative voices can come from within and you have the power to control it…
Which voices dominate?
The one you feed the most.
What is Love?
Real love starts with us. The relationship you have with your body affects all relationships. Loving yourself, without conditions, can heal the biggest divisions in your world.
Unconditional love is love. Everything else is a distortion of love.
We can’t give what we don’t have. If we don’t have self-love, we can’t give love. We can’t inspire others to be courageous when we are always afraid.
One of the biggest barriers to love is fear and it’s challenging to tell the difference between real and irrational fear.
