Mystery Gift Box #010 | Obsess or Balance?

The best hidden gems I've found; interesting ideas and concepts, thought-provoking questions, mind-blowing books/podcasts, cool animes/films, and other mysteries ❤️

Hey friends,

Had an interesting conversation with my life coach this week that I had like to share and reflect on through writing…

He asked me:

How does “balance” as a value relates to you, if at all?

I smiled and quickly said “I know no balance”…

I am passionate about the things I do and with that passion comes a high level of thinking and execution.

For the people around me, that can often look like a crazy level of obsession…

But…

So far, my obsession never reside within one thing…

My obsession usually spans across different areas that I am passionate about but I make sure no one thing / area dominates my life as that never resonate with me…

In lifestyle gamification, that’s called macro synchronisation. If I have 5 projects running simultaneously, my strategy would be to come up with a cohesive plan that optimise for all 5 projects and most often, that cohesive plan is “sub-optimal” to each of the project alone, especially when you have projects with contradictory objectives (think if you want to be a long-distance runner and a powerlifter at the same time).

But that cohesive plan would allow me to excel in all 5 projects in harmony. That’s the game I play.

I think what I called macro synchronisation is, in fact, balance? I might execute each area with high intensity but I always strike to progress all my areas simultaneously. The thought of giving up one area for another doesn’t excite me or make me happy.

And so… if I do have an obsession, it would be an obsession over balance?

A book about 43 challenges to expand your comfort zone and learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, with brief introduction to stoicism, buddhism, CBT, and mindset. The challenges are personal so it’s better to come up with your own.

The only takeaway that’s worth noting from the book is the categorisation of challenges:

  1. Skill — develop your ability to learn new things (skills or subjects); to understand and improve the way you learn best

  2. Physical — develop a stronger threshold for discomfort and understand what your body is capable of

  3. Mental — develop mental strength and adversity to overcome fears and uncomfortable situations

As you level up your skill, physical, and mental capacity, you will become more capable of doing much harder projects; this is a continuous cycle.

I spend most of my time on skill challenges.

I recently increased my physical capacity and continue to make adjustments.

My mental capacity are pushed through my skill and physical challenges.

What’s your skill, physical, and mental challenges?
